Found a 1987 saleen for sale saleen gt????

Postby einstein » Sat Aug 01, 2009 6:54 pm

I went a just looked at a 1987 mustang saleen for sale it had the saleen shifter knob, red trim rear seats wing also had the strut tower brace and the saleen wheels it was a t-top black however I have a sneaking suspension this isnt a real one for the fact that it had the gt body package. Did they make 87 with the gt body package instead of the lx with the saleen body kit? Also did have the saleen speedometer.

What other things will indicated if it is a real saleen?

I did get the vin number.

Will the vin say if its a real saleen?

Hey Matt.

I'm pretty new to the Saleen world but to me it sounds like a fake. As far as I know, the VIN won't tell you anything about it being a Saleen.

Was there a number on the bumper? Also, there should be two Saleen serial number badges on the car. One inside and one under the hood. On my 88 they are by the shifter and on the drivers fender.

If you have pictures, you can post them to this thread for people to see.

That's about all the advise I can offer. This is the perfect place to ask questions as there are a lot of knowledgeable Saleen owners here.

Good luck.

There were no 1987 Saleen GT built so this sounds like a fake. Get the VIN and post the last 6 of it and we can check it in the book or call Saleen to verify it. My guess, fake.

I didnt see any saleen badges on the fender it did have a saleen on the dash, it had saleen on the trunk it had a front strut brace saleen rims, it had just a standard mustang 5.0 intake is that correct? Anyone have pictures of these badges?

There should be an ID plate on the drivers side fender beside the strut tower. What number is on the bumper? What number is on the dash ID plate. They should all match with the ID plate on the fender inside the engine bay.

Here is a picture of my 87 engine bay, look on the right side of the photo (drivers side) and you'll see the correct ID badge:

Just to avoid any confusion, Georges engine bay is not typical. We all just wished ours looked that good.

One of the best and easiest way to tell if its a tribute or not is to count the lug nuts, there should be 5 per wheel and the car should have disc brakes in the rear. Th engine was all stock ford when new.

OK MIke, since you mentioned mine isn't typical of how they look, here is my engine bay before I did the restoration and 90% original stock............

(Note the fender ID plate still in it's original location.)

I thought I took that god awful intake plaque off the car before you bought it....so thats not how you got it LOL

If that is how you got it...im truly disappointed in myself for leaving it on there for so long lol

Just found this thread. I now own this car. It is a Saleen and was the first produced in 87. I have researched it and have documents from Saleen and the original owner. I am so glad I found this car, and am well under way on its resto. It did in fact leave Saleen with Gt ground effects and t-tops. It just goes to show that you never know what is out there. I will post pics when I get a chance.

There were 3 GT's converted by Saleen, around 1987. They are well documented, and one of them is pictured on the SCOA main site page. The car pictured in this thread, looks just like that car. The GT's got everything that Saleen upgraded, except the body kit. 5 lug upgrades, wheels, tires, suspension, seats, steering wheels, chassis bracing etc. The other documented car also had no graphics, as the standard Saleen graphics of the day, would not match up to the GT ground effects. Very cool car, please keep us posted with the restoration!

edit: This car is actually a 1989 'concept' car.

Thanks for the pics. I added two of the documents I have on the car to the photobucket pics. Saleens are fascinating to me,because you never know what was built. I bought my coupe of off Craigslist, it did not say it was a Saleen until the bottom of the ad. The coupe came with stripe delete and wing delete from Saleen,it also had aftermarket wheels,so it looked like a regular coupe. I guess I am addicted to the hunt for rare mustangs, but like I tell my wife there are worse things to be addicted too.(LOL)
